Anchorage, Alaska - Hitting the winning layup with just five seconds remaining, junior Pamela Findlay (Glenview, Ill.) led the Air Force women's basketball team to a 62-61 victory over Butler Wednesday in the third-place game of the Great Alaska Shootout. The Falcons move to 2-2 on the season, while the Bulldogs fall to 1-3 overall.
Although the Falcons led by as many as 10 points in the second half, Butler was able to chip away at its deficit, taking its first and only advantage of the game with just 18 seconds remaining. Trailing 61-60, Air Force came back down the court and was able to get the winning shot from Findlay.
The Falcons dominated through much of the opening stanza, going on a 10-0 run to break a 4-4 tie to start the game. Air Force eventually took a 30-11 advantage with just over six minutes remaining in the half, but Butler closed the period on a 16-3 run, cutting the Falcons' lead to 33-27 at the break.
Air Force tried to pull away after intermission, but the Bulldogs kept coming back, getting 13 second-half points from Susan Lester. While Butler held an advantage at the free throw line and committed just six turnovers, compared to 16 for the Falcons, Air Force did come up big on the boards, outrebounding the Bulldogs 53-32 for the game.
Findlay recorded her first career double-double, finishing with 11 points and a career-best 12 rebounds, while also adding a career-best seven assists. As a result, she was named the Carrs/Safeway Player of the Game. Senior Dawn Higginbotham (Colorado Springs, Colo.) was the Falcons' high scorer with 13 points, while Jacki Novak (Sr., Kewaunee, Wis.) added 11 points. Meanwhile, junior Alecia Steele (Oklahoma City, Okla.) notched 10 rebounds, marking the fourth time in as many games this season she has reached double-figures in rebounding.
Lester led the Bulldogs with 16 points, while Jackie Closser added 13 points.
The Falcons are back in action on Sunday, Nov. 26, with a road contest against San Diego. Tip-off is slated for 12:30 p.m. (PT) at the Jenny Craig Pavilion.
