Freshman Josh Rhynard scored Air Force's first goal of the 2006 season and the last goal of the season, knocking in the game-winner in overtime Sunday to lead the Falcon men's soccer team to a dramatic 2-1 victory over UNLV in Las Vegas. The game was the season finale for both teams, Air Force finished the campaign with a 5-12-1 overall record and a 4-6 mark in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation, while the Rebels finished 1-15-2 overall and 1-9 in league play.
Rhynard scored the golden goal game-winner just 1:56 into overtime, following a series of shots against Rebel goalkeeper Calvin Bailey. Bailey stopped the first two shots, and appeared to have collected the ball into his grasp following the second one, but Rhynard was able to gain possession of the ball and force it through Bailey from a yard out for the score in the 92nd minute. It was Rhynard's team-leading fifth goal of the season and he finished the campaign with 11 points.
UNLV notched the first goal of the game when Marcos Balladares took the ball down the middle of the field and found Lamar Neagle unmarked on the left side. Neagle drove in before unloading a shot from 20 yards out across the cage to the far right side of the goal past Falcon goalie Paul Elsbernd for the score in the 31st minute, giving UNLV a 1-0 advantage.
Air Force tied the game later in the first half, when an initial Falcon shot was shanked off to the right side. Senior Nathan Holloway tracked down the ball before it crossed over the line, and centered the ball that was then knocked into the goal from just five yards out by fellow senior Brendan Greenaway in the 40th minute. It was Greenaway's second goal of the season and Holloway's first point of his career in his final game as a Falcon.
Though both teams had their chances in the second half, neither could find the back of the net.
Bailey finished with three saves in goal, while Elsbernd was credited with five saves in his final appearance in a Falcon uniform. UNLV held a 15-9 edge on shots and a 4-0 advantage on corner kicks.
