SERVICE ACADEMY SHOWDOWN: After a week off from competition, the Air Force men's gymnastics team heads to California for the All-Academy Championships in Aliso Viejo on Saturday, Feb. 18. The annual Triad features the Falcons, as well as fellow service academy rivals Army and Navy.
LAST YEAR AT THE TRIAD: With a score of 186.400, Air Force finished third at the All-Academy Championships on Feb. 12 in Annapolis, Md. In the annual tri-meet of the service academies, Army picked up its fifth straight title with a score of 210.400. Navy finished second with 206.400 points, while Air Force took third. Then-sophomore Ryan Stromstad had the team's best finish of the night, placing third on the floor with a season-high 8.800.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS: Last weekend, Air Force's upcoming opponents faced off with one another in a dual meet in Annapolis. Navy snapped Army's six-meet series win streak, by a margin of 201.300-198.250. It was the Mids first home victory over the Black Knights in four years. As a team, the two programs split event wins, with Navy winning the pommel horse, still rings and vault.
RECAPPING THE ARMY DUALS: The Falcons continued to improve their season-best totals, as they took on Army in a pair of weekend dual-meets. On Friday night, the Falcons dropped a 205.550-181.250 decision to Army on Feb. 3. The Falcons' team score was nearly 10 points higher than their previous season best, set two weeks ago at Oklahoma. Air Force wrapped up the weekend on Feb. 5, with another season-high mark, posting a 183.900 in a loss to Army (207.100).
MORE MOORE: Senior Brian Moore opened the weekend with a second-place finish in the all-around, scoring a 44.250 on Friday night. Scoring a season-best 45.100 in the combined events, Moore won the all-around on Sunday afternoon, backed by a team-leading 8.300 on the parallel bars.
SEASON-BESTS: Every gymnast that competed at Army posted at least one season- or career-best score. The squad was led by senior Brian Moore, who improved his season bests in every event and the all-around over the weekend. Junior Kurt Antonio set season-high marks in five of the six individual events, as well as the all-around, while sophomore Brian Boardman each tallied year-best marks in four events. Freshman Josiah Loeser improved his collegiate-best scores on all of the events that he competed in.
CALIFORNIA DREAMING: This weekend's Triad marks the first of three straight meets in California for the Falcons. Air Force will also compete at the prestigious Pacific Coast Classic in Oakland on Saturday, Feb. 25, and the Peter Vidmar Invitational on Thursday, March 2.
MPSF MEET: The Air Force Academy will host the 2006 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Men's Gymnastics Championships on Saturday, March 25.
