Air Force junior right winger Brian Reese and junior goaltender Peter Foster were named College Hockey America Players of the Week for their efforts in leading Air Force to a sweep of first-place Alabama-Huntsville, Feb. 17-18, at the Cadet Ice Arena.
Resse, from Brainerd, Minn., earned offensive player of the week honors while Foster, from Canton, Mich., earned the defensive award. The awards are the first for each player this season and give Air Force five CHA Player of the Week awards this season. The award was the first of Reese's career while it was the sixth of Foster's career.
Reese, who had just one goal and five points in his first 17 games this season, has gone on a six-game goal-scoring streak and tallied four goals and eight points in three Falcon victories last week. Monday, Air Force ended a three-game, four-day road trip with a 3-2 overtime victory at Rochester Institute of Technology. He scored twice in that game, once on the power play and added the game-winning goal in overtime.
The Falcons upset Alabama-Huntsville, Friday and Saturday, with 3-1 and 5-0 wins over the first-place Chargers. Reese's goal in the third period sealed Friday's win and then he posted a career-best five-point night in Saturday's win. Air Force set a league record by scoring five power-play goals in the second period of that game and Reese scored one while assisting on the other four.
During his six-game goal-scoring streak, the Falcons have gone 4-2-0 and five of his eight goals during that time have come on the power play, which has enabled Air Force to go 12-for-41 (29.3 percent) during that time.
Foster was ranked in the bottom three nationally in save percentage two weeks ago but has now won his last four starts, including all three games for the Falcons last week, during which time he posted a 0.99 goals against average and a .948 save percentage. He opened the week with an 18-save effort in Monday's 3-2 overtime win at RIT. He then stopped 24 shots, Friday, in a 3-1 victory and closed out the week with his first shutout of the season, the seventh of his career,
which ranks seventh in the CHA record book.
Air Force, owners of the second-longest winning streak in the nation at three games, concludes the home schedule this weekend. The Falcons host Robert Morris University, Friday-Saturday, Feb. 24-25, at the Cadet Ice Arena. Friday's faceoff is at 7:05 p.m. while Saturday's game starts at 7:35 p.m. Both games will be broadcast in Colorado Springs on The Sports Animal AM 1300 and on the internet at www.AirForceSports.com
