AUSTIN, Texas - Senior Dana Pounds used a meet-record throw of 186'10" to earn her second straight title at the NCAA Midwest Regional Championships on Friday, May 26, in Austin, Texas. Bettering the runner-up by over 13 feet, Pounds easily qualified for her third consecutive trip to the national championships.
Pounds set a new Midwest Regional Record on her first toss of the afternoon, recording a 180'10" to surpass the previous meet record of 176'8" that Katy Doyle (Texas A&M) set in 2004. After passing on the next two attempts, Pounds broke that record with the winning mark of 186'10".
The winning mark guarantees Pounds a chance to defend her national title at the 2006 NCAA Championships in two weeks (June 7-10).
In addition to Pounds, the Falcons had two other field athletes competing at the regional meet. Senior Dan St. Clair posted a distance of 168'0" in the discus to finish 16th, while junior Caitie Holliday recorded a toss of 128'4" to finish 21st in the javelin.
From the track, sophomore Travis Picou narrowly missed a place in tomorrow's 200-meter dash finals, clocking a 20.89 to finish ninth in the preliminary heat, just one spot shy of qualifying.
