The 18th-ranked Air Force water polo got the East Meets West Tournament off to a tremendous start, rolling to a 16-2 victory over MIT in the first game of the morning. With the win, the Falcons improve to 5-4 on the season, while the Engineers fall to 2-5 on the season.
The Falcons dominated from the outset, leading 4-0 after one period and eventually going up 6-0 in the second before freshman Devin Lewis gave MIT its first score of the game. Air Force scored the last two goals of the first half, as senior Danny Kimmich (La Jolla, Calif.) converted on a pair of five-meter attempts to give the Falcons an 8-1 lead at the break.
The third period started out in the same way that the second had ended, with Air Force being awarded another five-meter attempt, one of four in the game for the Falcons. This time, it was junior Clark Condict (Irvine, Calif.) who scored on the penalty shot, kicking off a 5-0 run in the period for Air Force.
The Falcons' lead grew to 13-1 early in the final period when Kimmich notched his third goal of the day. Although the Engineers were able to get another goal minutes later, this time from Mark Artz, Air Force was not done, scoring two more by the end of regulation, including the first collegiate goal for freshman Ben Cumnock-Francois (San Antonio, Texas).
Kimmich and Condict each led the Falcons with three goals on the morning, while Joey Brewer (So., Clovis, Calif.), Kyle Schafer (Sr., Irvine, Calif.) and Kevin Williams (So., River Forest, Ill.) added two goals each. Notching the other goals for Air Force were Justin Berry (Jr., Windermere, Fla.), Tyler Hewko (So., Laguna Hills, Calif.), Jack Hines (Fr., Riverside, Calif.) and Cumnock-Francois.
The Falcons return to action this afternoon when they take on WWPA-foe La Verne at 1:30.
