U.S.A.F. ACADEMY, Colo. - Each of Air Force's top line forwards scored a goal as Air Force beat Holy Cross, 3-1, in an Atlantic Hockey Association game, Friday, Nov. 23, at the Academy's Cadet Ice Arena.
Air Force improved to 7-4-0 overall and 5-4-0 in the AHA. Holy Cross fell to 4-4-1 overall and 3-3-1 in the league.
Holy Cross scored first as the Crusader power play, the No. 1 unit in the nation, converted at the 3:28 mark of the opening period. Frank O'Grady made a pass down low to Ryan Driscoll who sent the puck through the crease. The puck was tipped into the air and Brodie Sheahan batted it out of the air for his fifth of the season.
The Falcons answered less than three minutes later as Eric Ehn scored to tie the game from his linemate Brent Olson. Olson intercepted a pass in the neutral zone and fed Ehn at the blue line. The 2007 All-American netted his fourth goal of the season at the 8:04 mark. The same two Falcons combined for AFA's second goal at the 14:38 mark for a 2-1 lead. Frider chipped the puck up the wall to Ehn. Ehn made a no-look pass from the boards in the neutral zone to Olson who was skating down the right wing. His wrister from the top of the right circle beat Crusader goalie Adam Roy high for the eventual game-winning goal.
Neither team scored in the second period as the Falcons held a 25-10 shot advantage through the first 40 minutes. The Falcons were clinging to the 2-1 lead when Holy Cross pulled its goaltender with 1:43 left in the third. Volkening made two big saves for the Falcons and then just before the horn sounded, AFA added an empty-net goal. Ehn cleared a puck deep into the corner and then beat two Holy Cross players to the puck in the corner. The puck came out to the left point where Frider buried a slap shot into the empty net.
Air Force out-shot Holy Cross, 33-17, in the game. The Falcons were 0-for-5 on the power play while Holy Cross was 1-for-3. Roy made 30 saves for the Crusaders. Volkening made 16 for Air Force.
The same two teams conclude the series Saturday, Nov. 24, at 7:05 p.m. MT at the Cadet Ice Arena.
