USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - Despite earning two first-place finishes and scoring its highest team total of the season, the No. 17 Air Force men's gymnastics team dropped a 198.050-185.800 decision to service academy rival and 12th-ranked Army on Saturday, Feb. 3, at the Academy.
The Falcons, who have steadily improved over the season, scored their highest team total to date, topping the previous season-high by nearly five points. As a team, Air Force increased its season-best scores in five of the six events. The Falcons won the pommel horse with a season-high 30.150, while also improving on the still rings (31.950), vault (30.350), parallel bars (32.500) and high bar (30.850).
Individually, freshman Garrett Canter (Tallahassee, Fla.) won the pommel horse, leading the Falcons to three of the top four spots. Canter posted a career-best score of 8.000 to become the only athlete to reach the eight-point plateau on the pommel. Junior Brian Boardman (Naperville, Ill.) upped his season-best score by over a point (7.900) to finish second to Canter. Classmate Tyler Sickles garnered a score of 7.400 to finish fourth in the event.
Sophomore Jacob Schonig (Los Gatos, Calif.) tied for first on the still rings with a career-best mark of 8.550.
In addition to his fourth-place finish on the pommel horse, Sickles led the Falcons on a pair of events. He finished fourth on the high bar with a career-best mark of 8.600 on the high bar, while placing fifth on the parallel bars behind another career-best score of 8.300.
Freshman Brennan Wolford (Thornville, Ohio) led the Falcons on the floor exercise with a score of 7.700 to finish in a three-way tie for fourth, while sophomore Josiah Loeser (Alvin, Texas) scored a 7.800 on the vault to place sixth. Wolford also tallied a career-best 44.650 to take second in the all-around, while senior Kurt Antonio (Rio Rancho, N.M.), who was competing in his final meet at the Academy, tallied a season-best 42.800 to finish third.
Air Force returns to competition on Saturday, Feb. 17, as it travels to San Francisco, Calif., to compete at the annual Service Academy Classic. The Falcons will compete against Army for the second straight meet, while also facing Navy for the first time this season.
