USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - Six programs that played in the 2006 NCAA Div. I Women's Soccer Championships highlight the 2007 Air Force women's soccer schedule, announced today by head coach Marty Buckley. The Falcons open the season, Aug. 31 against Fairfield at the Denver Invitational.
"This is yet another tough schedule for our team," Buckley said. "We play several tough non-conference opponents, three of which played in the 2006 NCAA's and the Mountain West Conference slate is one of the toughest in the country. We had a very strong Spring season and we feel that momentum will carry over into a success Fall season."
Three non-conference opponents--McNeese State, Idaho State and either Denver or Colorado--and three conference opponents--BYU, UNLV and Utah--made the 2006 NCAA Championship Tournament.
Air Force plays 10 home matches in 2007, including a pair of exhibition matches. The Falcons play host to defending NCAA Div. II Champion Metro State in an exhibition match on Aug 15. AFA also hosts NCAA tourney participant Colorado College on Aug 17 in another exhibition match.
The Falcons open their regular season Aug. 31 against Fairfield at the DU Invitational. They will play either Denver or Colorado, both NCAA Tourney participants, on Sept. 2.
Air Force then returns home for three consecutive home matches. AFA hosts Northern Colorado in a midweek tilt on Sept. 5, then hosts Davison and McNeese State on Sept. 7 and 9.
Air Force hits the road for back-to-back road tournaments the following two weekends. The Falcons head to St. Louis, Mo., for the weekend of Sept. 14-16 to take take part in the Toys for Tots Tournament. Air Force takes on Army on the 14th and Southeast Missouri State on the 16th.
The Falcons then head to Pocatello, Idaho, the following weekend to take part in the Idaho State Tournament. Air Force plays Northern Iowa on Sept. 21 and host ISU on the 23rd.
The Falcons then return home for a pair of home matches prior to their MWC matches. The Falcons host North Dakota State and UC Irvine on Sept. 28 and 30.
AFA opens MWC play on Oct. 5 at TCU. The following week, the Falcons host San Diego State (Oct. 12) and Wyoming (Oct. 14). The Falcons then play a road match at Utah (Oct. 18) and then return home to host BYU (Oct. 18).
The Falcons wrap up the regular season with road trips to UNLV (Oct. 26) and New Mexico (Nov. 3.)
Air Force will also be looking to participate in the 2007 MWC Women's Soccer Championships, held Nov. 7-10 in Provo, Utah. The top six teams in the eight-team women's soccer league will make the tourney.
