Air Force opens 2007 Season At Denver Tournament
The Air Force women's soccer team opens its 2007 season with a pair of matches at the Denver Tournament Aug. 30-Sept. 2 at Pioneer Field on the Denver University Campus. The Falcons take on Fairfield on Friday, Aug. 30 and tourney host DU on Sunday, Sept 2.
Who's Back
The Falcons return several players off the 2006 squad that went 3-12-4 overall and 0-5-2 in Mountain West Conference play (8th). Air Force returns seven starters and 16 letterwinners off the 2006 team, including its team MVP in junior Corbin Sanford. Junior Erin Wallace returns at goalkeeper after finishing fourth in the conference with 79 saves to go with five shutouts. Team co-captains for 2007 will be seniors Christin Brodie and Rhett Chase.
Who's New
Twelve freshmen join the Falcons for the 2007 season. Shannon Nail (California) comes to the Academy after a three-time All-American campaign in high school and Lyndsey Horn (New Mexico), Leah Nielsen (Michigan) and Madison Schottleutner (Texas) were all-state selections. Jess Brown (Texas), Tiff Christoffersen (Colorado), Sarah Horton (Virginia), Ali Neptune (Florida), Sarah Petersen (New York), Haley Puffenbarger (Virginia) and Elizabeth Smith (Virginia) also join the team.
Who's Gone
Seven Falcons graduated in 2006. Three-time team scoring leader Brittney Perkowski, along with Melinda Mokos, Erin Fitzpatrick, Katie Plichta, Alison Wood, Lindsay Temes and Ashley Parker made up the class of 2006-07.
Scouting The Opponents
Fairfield returns 19 players and nine starters off a 2006 squad that went 9-7-4 overall and finished third in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. Air Force and Fairfield have played once before, with the Falcons taking a 2-1 win at home in 2003. Fairfield's leading returning scorer is sophomore forward Casey Frobey, who led the team with 12 goals and 27 points. Senior Brett Maron started 18 or 19 matches at goalkeeper, notching a 0.95 GAA to go with seven shutouts and a 8-6-4 record.
Denver returns 19 players and seven starters off a 2006 squad that went 19-3-1 and won the Sun Belt Conference title by going undefeated in conference play. Denver leads the all-time series with Air Force, 10-1-1. The two teams last met during the regular season in 2001, a 3-0 Pioneer win at the Academy. Senior midfielder Taryn Hemmings is the leading returning scorer for DU, leading the team with 15 goals, 12 assists for 42 points. Sophomore Mackenzie Snyder is the top returning goalkeeper for the Pioneers, allowing one goal in 165 minutes for a 0.55 GAA in nine games as a reserve.

Air Force has three home matches next week beginning with a Wednesday, Sept. 5 match at Northern Colorado. The Falcons also host Davidson and McNeese State on Sept. 7 & 9 at the Cadet Soccer Stadium.
