BOULDER, Colo. - With a career-best total of 4,766 points, junior Skylar Morgan picked up a second-place finish at the Potts Invitational heptathlon in Boulder, Colo. Morgan, who finished just 18 points shy of the top spot, increased his sixth-place standing in the Academy's all-time record book after improving his personal-best total. In all, four Falcons wrapped up the seven-event competition on Saturday, Jan. 19.
Despite the tight battle between Morgan and meet winner Alex Von Hagen (Colorado), nearly 300 points separated the top two from the rest of the field. Senior Matt Gensic totaled 4,488 points to finish third, while freshman Noah Palicia had a strong second day to finish fourth with 4,473 points. Classmate Philip Rancourt rounded out the Air Force contingent with a sixth-place score of 3,798 points.
Morgan won the 60-meter hurdles event with a time of 8.70, while finishing fourth in the 1000-meter run (2:54.9) and fifth in the pole vault (12'1½'). Gensic was one of three Falcons to sweep the top spots of the pole vault, as he finished second with a height of 14'5¼". Gensic also recorded a fifth-place 1000-meter time of 2:58.53 and a sixth-place time of 9.89 in the 60-meter hurdles.
Air Force collected victories in all three individual events, as Palicia posted first-place finishes in the pole vault (14'9") and 1000-meter run (2:45.37). By adding a third-place time of 8.88 in the 60-meter hurdles, Palicia combined for the eighth-best heptathlon total in Academy history. Rancourt moved into ninth on the all-time list after rounding out the Falcons' sweep of the pole vault's top spots. Clearing 14'1¼" to place third, Rancourt also added a sixth-place finish in the 1000 meters (3:34.27) and a seventh-place time in the 60-meter hurdles (9.93).
The Falcons travel to Lincoln, Neb., next Saturday (Jan. 26) for a pair of competitions. The Falcons will team up with BYU and Colorado State to form "Team MWC" as they take on "Team Big 12" (Kansas State, Missouri, Nebraska) in the second-annual Conference Challenge. In addition, several members of the Air Force team will compete in the Nebraska Wesleyan Open.
