MILFORD, Conn. - Sacred Heart held off a late Air Force rally for a 2-1 win in an Atlantic Hockey Association game Friday, Jan. 4, at the Milford Ice Pavilion in Milford, Conn.
Air Force fell to 9-6-4 overall and 7-5-3 in the AHA. Sacred Heart is now 7-8-2 overall and 7-2-2 in the league. The Falcons are still in first place in the league with 17 points while the Pioneers are second with 16.
Air Force outshot Sacred Heart, 11-5, in the opening period, but the Pioneers entered the first intermission with a 1-0 lead. With 2:33 left in the first period, Sacred Heart won a faceoff in the offensive end and Bear Tripp made a centering pass from behind the net. Eric Giosa was the recipient of the pass and netted his fifth of the season.
The Falcons again outshot the Pioneers in the second period, but it was the home team that put the marker on the board. At the 5:23 mark, Alexandre Parent tipped in a shot by Erik Boisvert for a 2-0 Pioneer lead. AFA had two power plays in the period, but were unable to convert.
Sacred Heart held on to the two-goal lead until the final minute of the game when the Falcons had a power play and also pulled the goaltender for a two-man advantage. With 46 seconds left in the game, Brent Olson made a cross-ice pass from the bottom of the right circle through the crease. Jeff Hajner put the one-timer past Stefan Drew for his eighth of the season. AFA had some chances late in with the goaltender still off the ice, but Drew was there to make the stops to preserve the 2-1 win.
Air Force outshot Sacred Heart, 36-19, in the game. Volkening made 17 saves while Drew made 35 for the Pioneers. AFA was 1-for-5 while SHU was 0-for-1. SHU won 46 of the 77 faceoffs in the game.
"We needed to get a goal in the second period when we had back to back power plays and that would have changed the momentum," head coach Frank Serratore said. "There goalie was excellent and our goalie wasn't bad. We had a couple breakdowns and it cost us. I didn't think our effort was bad but we didn't capitalize on our chances."
Air Force and Sacred Heart conclude the two-game AHA series on Saturday, Jan. 5, at 7:05 EST in Milford, Conn.
