USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - Air Force seniors Jacob Schonig and Josiah Loeser will serve as co-captains for the 2009 season, head coach Kip Simons announced. This is the first such honor for both gymnasts and the 11th time in the Falcons' 53-year history that a pair of gymnasts has shared the honor of team captain.
"Jake and Josiah are sure to use their captainship to lead this team throughout the season, both on and off the competition field," Simons said. The duo will guide an extremely young team, which features just four seniors and juniors compared to 12 sophomores and freshmen.
Schonig, who served as the Wing Commander during the fall semester, is the defending USAG national champion on the still rings. The returning team leader on that event, Schonig is a four-time member of the Superintendent's List and has also been honored for his academic performance by the College Gymnastics Association and the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation.
Like his captain counterpart, Loeser has participated at the NCAA Championships. Loeser, the returning team leader on the vault and parallel bars, has been listed to the Dean's List and Athletic Director's List. He has seen action in nearly every meet during his first three years.
The Falcons kick off the 2009 season on Saturday, Jan. 10, when they host the Rocky Mountain Open at the Academy at 7:30 p.m. Air Force will welcome Arizona State, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Washington and members of the USOTC to the Cadet West Gym for the annual meet.
