Final Spots Decided During Wing Open Semifinal Action

USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - The final pairings of the 50th Wing Open Tournament were decided this evening (Feb. 20) in the Upper Boxing Room of the Cadet Gym. Ranging from 132-pounds to the heavyweight division, action intensified as 24 boxers put it all on the line for a chance to make it to the finals.
Junior David Simon won the night's opening bout and the first ticket to Clune Arena, as he decisioned freshman Michael Mizes in a 132-pound contest. Mike Dunn will represent the Class of 2011, as he upset junior Sean May in the only 147-pound bout of the night.
Both spots for the next five weight classes were up for grabs. Senior Ryan Price will make his third straight appearance in the Wing Open finals, as he took a unanimous decision from junior Rudy Bowen at 156 pounds. For his efforts, Price was chosen as the Academy's Boxer of the Week. He will face classmate Daryn Nelson, who picked off sophomore Joseph Silvio by decision.
Senior James Dunn will return to the Clune Arena ring, after decisioning junior Justin Lee. He will face two-time 156-pound champion Clifford Moore. The senior earned the judges' decision over junior Austin Almand.
The 175-pound bout will feature a pair of newcomers to the finals. Senior Jacob Lambach claimed a decision over junior Andrew Catoire, while junior Lucas Gagliardi earned a unanimous bid over classmate Elon Brumfield.
Like the 175-pound bouts, the 195-pound and heavyweight bouts will feature an all cast of contenders. Senior Chris Johnson unanimously defeated junior Casey Butikoher in the first 195-pound bout, while junior Richard Kenny claimed a decision over freshman William Lindberg. At the heavyweight level, sophomore Cory Tintzman defeated freshman Ross Elder in a referee-stopped-contest to advance to the finals. He will face junior Joshua Henderson-Casteel, who earned the judges' unanimous approval in his bout with freshman Daniel WInningham.
The finalists head to Clune Arena for the 50th Wing Open Championships celebration on Sunday, March 2. Action begins at 2 p.m., and admission is free to the public.
