Falcons Net Season-High in Victory of Springfield

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Improving its season-best score by over six points, the Air Force men's gymnastics team defeated Springfield College, 337.500-333.000, on Sunday, Feb. 3, in Springfield, Mass. Picking up its second victory in as many meets, the Falcons claimed three of the top four finishes on the still rings, vault and parallel bars.

For the second straight competition, senior Greg Stine guided the Falcons to victory. He won five of the six individual events, as well as the all-around competition, while posting Academy-record scores in two events. Stine posted a new program standard of 15.600 on the still rings, while increasing the high bar score by nearly one whole point (14.650) to take first in that event. He also won the floor (14.350), vault (15.350) and parallel bars (14.500), en route to an all-around score of 87.050.

With three runner-up finishes and several career-best scores, freshman Daniel Klimkowski also had a strong meet. He finished second on the pommel horse (13.450), parallel bars (14.050) and all-around (83.400). In addition, Klimkowski tallied a career-best 13.650 to tie for third on the high bar, while garnering a 14.100 to place fifth on the floor exercise.

Air Force picked up three of the top four scores in several events, including a first-, second- and third-place sweep on the vault. Behind Stine's winning score, classmate Brian Boardman (15.100) and junior Josiah Loeser (14.550) posted career-best scores to finish second and third, respectively.

In addition to the vault, Stine and Loeser were a part of strong Air Force showings on two other events. Stine and Klimkowski placed first and second on the parallel bars, while Loeser (13.800) and Boardman (13.35) added fourth- and fifth-place scores. In addition, Stine and Loeser (14.550) finished first and fourth on the still rings, while junior Jacob Schonig finished second after upping his career-best score to 15.500.

Air Force claimed five other top-six performances during the meet. Senior Tyler Sickles finished fourth on the pommel horse with a career-best score of 13.150, while sophomore Garrett Canter scored 12.950 to take sixth on the high bar. Freshman Aaron Zaiser tied for sixth on the vault with a career-best 14.900, while Boardman and sophomore Brennan Wolford matched scores of 13.800 to tie for sixth on the floor exercise.

The Falcons are off from competition next weekend, before traveling to Aliso Viejo, Calif., on Sunday, Feb. 17, for the annual All-Academy Championships against fellow service academies, Army and Navy.
