Nine Champions Highlight Falcons' Regional Team Title

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Highlighted by nine individual champions, the Air Force boxing team won the team title at the 2008 National Collegiate Boxing Association Western Regional Championships this past weekend in Santa Clara, Calif. Eight of the Falcons' nine champions were first-time honorees, as Air Force claimed its 28th team title in the last 29 years.
Three juniors opened the night with regional titles. Dean Chuva won his first regional title, as he defeated Jason Morris of UNLV in the 112-pound weight class. Jesse Horton repeated as the 119-pound regional champ when he defeated Santa Clara's Ian Fletcher in a referee-stopped contest, while Harvey White decisioned San Jose State's Alejandro Cuadra in the 125-pound bout.
Seniors picked up the next three regional titles for the Falcons. Brian Navin won his first regional title, taking a 139-pound decision from Jerome Foster of UNLV, while Daryn Nelson picked up his first title with a 156-pound championship over Nevada's Ryan Kotey. Classmate Clifford Moore won his second regional title after decisioning San Jose State's Alan Cheng in the 165-pound final.
Junior Boyce Loomis earned his first 175-pound regional title, after receiving a medical walkover victory from Charles Blackwell of UNLV. Senior Chris Johnson decisioned Cal's Karl Berta in the 195-pound weight division for his first regional title. In addition, junior Cory Tintzman earned the regional title in the heavyweight division, as he went unopposed.
Juniors Nathan Liptak and Lucas Gagliardi finished second to Nevada boxers in their first regional appearance. Liptak dropped a 147-pound decision to Thomas Gennaro, while Gagliardi lost a referee-stopped-contest to Kenny Dyer-Redner.
All of the first- and second-place finishers will advance to the NCBA National Championships. The three-day championship round of competition will take place on April 10-12 at The Downtown Ballroom in Reno, Nev.
