Air Force Wraps Up Third Day of Conference Meet

FORT WORTH, Texas - Sophomore Nick Frawley earned all-conference honors in the pole vault, as the Air Force track and field team concluded the third day of action (May 16) at the Mountain West Conference Championships in Fort Worth, Texas. He was one of six men to score points for the Falcons, while a pair of women tallied points for their team.
Frawley cleared 17'2¾" to match for the second-highest height of the day, but finished third by attempts. He was top underclassmen in the field, finishing second to seniors from New Mexico and BYU. It is the third time in four opportunities (both indoor and outdoor) that Frawley has recorded all-conference accolades.
Frawley was one of three Falcons to earn all-conference honors today, as senior Ian McFarland and junior Sean Houseworth finished first and third, respectively, in the 10,000-meter run. Click here for this morning's recap.
Air Force earned multiple points from a pair of runners in the 3000-meter steeplechase. Junior Matt Williams finished fifth with a time of 9:05.30, while senior Josh van Wyngaarden placed seventh with a time of 9:28.27. Williams' time is fifth-fastest time in Air Force history.
Senior Devin Hart rounded out the Falcons' scoring efforts with a fifth-place finish in the long jump, recording a season-best 22'2¼"
BYU pulled out to a huge lead after the third day of competition. With 114 points, the Cougars lead Colorado State (53 points) and Air Force (51 points). New Mexico (36), Wyoming (33) and TCU (19) round out the six men's teams competing this weekend.
Sophomores Sara Neubauer and Katie Weber each tallied points for the women's team. Neubauer picked up a fourth-place finish in the shot put with a toss of 47'3¾", while Weber placed fifth in the javelin throw behind a throw of 146'11".
Colorado State sits in first with 91 points, heading into the final day of action. BYU is second with 51 points, while New Mexico is third with 37. Air Force is currently in eighth with nine points.
In addition to the finals of several field events, the 10K and steeplechase, numerous preliminary heats were conducted today.
Air Force advanced three Falcons to tomorrow's finals in the 110-meter hurdles. Junior Kellen Curry won the preliminary round with a time of 14.43, while freshman Terry Robinson (14.70) and junior Skylar Morgan (15.15) finished fifth and ninth, respectively.
Robinson also advanced in the 400-meter hurdles, after finishing fourth with a career-best time of 53.43. Senior Jon Butcher also advanced in the intermediate hurdles, clocking a season-best time of 53.60 to finish sixth.
Senior Travis Picou advanced to the finals in both the 100- and 200-meter events. Picou clocked a time of 10.65 to place sixth in the 100-meter dash and then placed fourth in the 200-meter event with a time of 21.20. Classmate Kevin Hawkins won his heat of the 800-meter preliminary with a time of 1:51.68, finishing fourth overall.
Sophomore Ally Romanko qualified for the finals of the 800-meter run on the women's side. Winning her heat, Romanko finished second overall with a time of 2:16.51.
Two of Romanko's classmates moved up in the program's all-time record books, even though they didn't advance in their respective events. Danielle McCarty clocked a Sophomore Class record time of 62.94 in the 400-meter hurdles to jump from eighth to fourth in the program history, while Jessica Mapes clocked a time of 57.57 in the 400-meter dash to improve her seventh-place standing in the all-time record books. It is the second time in as many days that McCarty has set a Sophomore Class record (heptathlon).
In addition, junior Katie Lynch moved up the all-time list in the 10,000-meter run this morning. Competing in her first conference championship, her time of 37:52.09 is the seventh-fastest time in Academy history.
Action concludes tomorrow (Saturday, May 17) at the Lowdon Track Complex. The first field event - the women's discus - is slated to begin at 10 a.m. The women's 4x100-meter relay will be the first event on the track and is scheduled to begin at noon.
