Air Force Hosts UNLV and San Diego State
The Air Force women's soccer plays host to UNLV and San Diego State this Thurs.-Sat., Oct. 15 & 17. The Falcons take on UNLV on the 15th and SDSU on the 17th. Live stats will be available for both matches.
Last Week
Air Force dropped a pair of 1-0 matches at TCU and New Mexico. The Falcons lost to TCU on a penalty kick in overtime and New Mexico scored the lone goal in the 56th minute on Saturday.
Falcon Leaders
Freshman midfielder Stephanie Patterson leads the team with seven points, scoring two goals to go with three assists. Sophomore forwards Kelly Bieber and Bridgett Murphy are also tied for the team lead with two goals scored. Freshman Charity Blanton has played 853 minutes in front of the net for the Falcons, and has 45 saves on the season to go with a 2.11 goals-allowed average. Sophomore Ariana Green has started the last two matches and has logged 431 minutes on the season to go with a 1.46 GAA and 21 saves.
One of Nation's Youngest Teams
Air Force has one of the youngest women's soccer teams in the nation, as 24 of the 28 players on the roster are underclassmen. Air Force has just two seniors and two juniors and have 12 freshmen and sophomores. Air Force has started at least eight underclassmen in every game.
Team Captains
Seniors Susan Finch and Kelsey Yip are team captains for the 2009 season. Both are three-year letterwinners.
Scouting The Opponents
UNLV enters the weekend with a 4-6-4 record after dropping 1-0 matches to Utah and BYU last weekend. Sophomore defender Jenna Larkin leads the team lead with three goals for six points. Senior Alicia Lugo has a 1.00 GAA in 1,347 minutes at goalkeeper, to go with 75 saves.
San Diego State enters the weekend with a 7-3-5 record after tying both BYU and Utah last weekend. Junior midfielder Cat Walker leads the team with five goals and 13 points. Junior Aubree Southwick has logged 1,456 minutes in front of the net and has 53 saves and a 1.11 GAA.
The Coaches
Larry Friend is in his first year as the head coach at Air Force. The 1985 USAFA grad. has 12 years of assistant coaching experience at the Academy. He is just the second women's soccer head coach at Air Force.
Katherine Mertz is 48-36-18 in her fifth year at UNLV. Mertz is a1998 NC State grad.
Mike Friesen is 22-21-11 in her third year at San Diego State. Friesen is a 1996 Sonoma State grad.
Opponent Connections
- Air Force freshman goalkeeper and UNLV senior goalkeeper Alicia Lugo are both Lancaster, Calif., natives and attended Quartz High School.
- UNLV senior forward Kelly Labor is from Steamboat Springs and attended Steamboat Springs High School and Regis University.
- Air Force freshman Anna Lowe and San Diego State sophomore Hayley Marsh were teammates at Chatfield High School in Littleton.
- San Diego State has one more player on its roster from Colorado. Sr. Millie Allen is from Thornton and attended Horizon High School.
