COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - After recording a career-best, NCAA Automatic Qualifying Mark in the pole vault on Feb. 14, Air Force junior Nick Frawley (Midlothian, Texas) was named the Mountain West Conference Co-Male Athlete of the Week, the league announced this afternoon (Feb. 17). It is the first such honor for Frawley, who shared the weekly award with Wyoming's Jake Shanklin.
After clearing 18'1" to win the pole vault at the Air Force Invitational, Frawley set a new Academy record. That mark edged the previous record of 18'0½" that Paul Gensic (2005) and David Pike (1995) had shared. That height also topped Gensic's Junior Class record.
That mark automatically qualifies him to the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships on March 13-14. He is one of just three MWC athletes that have earned that distinction so far this season. His jump of 18'1" is the best in the conference and the third-best in league history. It is also the third-highest in the nation to date.
