Falcons Split Weekend at Reno Invitational

RENO, Nev. - The Air Force boxing team posted a 4-4 record over the weekend at the National Collegiate Boxing Association (NCBA) Invitational in Reno, Nev. Senior Boyce Loomis picked up his second Boxer of the Week award in as many weeks with a knockout victory over Kenny Dyer-Redner of the host school, Nevada, in a 185-pound contest.
The night opened with senior Dean Chuva losing a 130-pound decision to Santa Clara's Brandon Dahl. Classmate Dave Simon got the Falcons in the win column with a 135-pound decision over Nevada's Luke Tiano. Air Force went 1-1 against Nevada in the next two bouts, as Michael Dunn dropped a 150-pound contest to Nate Weeden, while Lucas Gagliardi claimed a victory over James Gardner in a 180-pound matchup.
A pair of Nevada boxers took decisions from Daniel Starr and Austin Almand. Starr was decisioned by Sai Badveli in a 139-pound bout, while Almand fell by decision at 165 pounds to Jacob Munson-Decker.
In the Falcons' next-to-last bout, Loomis stepped into the ring with Dyer-Redner. After a cautious first round, the two boxers began using aggressive combinations. Loomis sent Dyer-Redner to the mat just 30 seconds into the second round, causing the referee to stop the contest. Cory Tintzman's referee-stopped-contest (first round) over Nyal Bedong of UNLV in the heavyweight division secured the Falcons' even record.
The Falcons return to the Academy on Feb. 6, when they host the final Friday Night Fights event of the 2009 season. Action begins at 4:30 p.m., in the Upper Boxing Room of the Cadet Gym.
