Air Force Closes out Friday Night Fights

USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - The Air Force boxing team closed out its Friday Night Fights season with 14 hard-hitting bouts on Feb. 6. Tonight was the final preparation for the annual Wing Open Tournament, which begins next week in the Upper Boxing Room. This week, however, 24 boxers stepped into the ring for one more chance against their fellow cadets.
Sophomore Michael Mizes opened the night with a victorious decision over senior Jesse Horton in a 132-pound weight class. Senior Dean Chuva evened his FNF record with a decision over classmate Dave Simon in a 133-pound bout. Nick Cataldo decisioned Dalton Hall at 168 pounds, while Justin Lee took a decision from Luke Dugger at 167 pounds.
In between those two bouts, senior Nathan Liptak earned the judges' decision over classmate Sean May in a 156-pound bout. Liptak was named the Academy's Boxer of the Week, using good movement, defense and combination punches in his victory. Liptak and May combined for what the coaches called `one of the classiest boxing matches of the year'.
In the 180-pound bout, Lucas Gagliardi took a decision from Mike McLain, while Bailey Ball decisioned Seth Gunn at 147 pounds. In the 156-pound contest, the only bout that didn't go to the final bell, Michael Dunn defeated Jeffrey Witt when the referee stopped the bout in the third round. Matthew DeMars decisioned Nicholas Watts in the night's 125-pound contest.
Jumping to the heavyweight division, Mike Chambers decisioned Garrett Gilbertson, while Tyrus Korecki won his FNF debut in a 160-poiunf decision over Ryan Wilkinson. Fred Johnson won the 198-pound bout over newcomer Kevin Williams, while Evan Lomeli decisioned Tom Meyer at 183 pounds. Senior Jon Andresen closed out the night with a 185-pound decision over Logan Brandt.
Air Force returns to action on Thursday, Feb. 12, when it begins the preliminary round of action for the 2009 Wing Open Tournament.
