Whitney Wraps Up Opening Day at NCAA Regional

STILLWATER, Okla. - Following one round of action, Air Force junior Tom Whitney (La Quinta, Calif.) sits in a tie for sixth place at the 2009 NCAA Men's Golf South Central Regional Championship, being held at the par-72, 7,407-yard Karsten Creek Golf Course. At the conclusion of the regional competition, the top five teams and top individual not on an advancing team will move on to the championship finals, being held May 26-30 at the Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio.
Whitney, one of 10 participants competing as an individual, fired an even-par 72 in the opening round to land in a five-way tie for sixth place in the field of 75. Meanwhile, South Dakota State's Trent Peterson, the top-seeded individual in the tournament, sits atop the player leaderboard with an opening round of 67 (-5).
In the team standings, top-ranked Oklahoma State leads the way, firing a 296 (+8) on Thursday. Meanwhile, three teams sit in a tie for second place at 298--Chattanooga, Arkansas and LSU.
Round two of the South Central Regional will begin tomorrow morning. Whitney will tee off from hole 10 at 8:40 a.m. (CT).
