Sara Neubauer and Nick Frawley Advance at NCAA Championships

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - The Air Force track and field team got off to a strong start at the 2009 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships this afternoon (June 10). The Falcons went two-for-two, as juniors Sara Neubauer (shot put) and Nick Frawley (pole vault) qualified to the finals of their respective events during the first day of action in Fayetteville, Ark.
Posting the second farthest distance of her career, Neubauer recorded a throw of 53'7¾" to finish sixth in the 27-competitor shot put qualifier. She opened her three-throw preliminary round with a distance of 51'5¾" and followed that up with a mark of 50'8¼", before tossing her day-high throw of 53'7¾". Neubauer led a trio of Mountain West Conference throwers in the national preliminaries, bettering her fellow all-conference selections by at least 15 places.
Frawley advanced to the outdoor finals of the pole vault for the second straight year, after tying for sixth in the qualifying flight with a clearance of 17'2¾". After passing on the opening height, Frawley cleared the 16'8¾" bar, before posting the advancing distance on his first attempt at that height. His clearance of 17'2¾" was the second-best clearance of the day. The pole vault finals for Frawley will be held on Friday, June 12.
Action continues at the NCAA Championships tomorrow (June 11). In addition to the finals of the shot put, Neubauer will also compete in the qualifying round of the discus throw at 10:30 a.m. (CDT). Seniors Kellen Curry (110-meter hurdles, first round), Daniel Castle (1500-meter run, semi-final) and Sean Houseworth (10,000-meter run, final) will make their debut in the national championships meet tomorrow night.
