COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Air Force freshman Jacob Houder was a recipient of the Mountain West Conference Scholar-Athlete Award, the league office announced today (June 24). Houder, a native of Pinehurst, Texas, completed his first year at the Academy with a 3.72 grade-point-average. Houder was one of 548 student-athletes to earn the league honor.
Houder had a stellar rookie campaign, earning the team's MVP award. In addition to setting an Academy record on the pommel horse, Houder earned a pair of USAG All-America accolades and a selection to the NCAA Championships. He posted the Falcons' highest scores of the season on the pommel horse, parallel bars and high bar, while claiming three event titles on the parallel bars and one on the pommel horse. Even after just one season, Houder's name already dots the Falcons' all-time scoring list. He has at least a share of eight of the nine highest marks in program history on the pommel horse. Houder also holds a share of the fifth-best high bar mark and sixth-best parallel bars score in Air Force history.
The freshman joins former Falcons James Hayes (2001-02), Aaron Jackson (2003), Patrick McAndrew (2002-03-04) and Brian Boardman (2007-08) as members of the men's gymnastics program to be honored by the Mountain West Conference.
The MWC Scholar-Athlete Award is the highest academic honor bestowed by the conference. To be eligible for selection, student-athletes must have completed at least two academic terms at the member institution, while maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or better, and have participated in varsity competition in an NCAA-sponsored sport.
