Air Force Duo Named CGA All-America Scholar-Athletes

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - Two members of the Air Force men's gymnastics program earned 2009 All-America Scholar-Athlete honors by the College Gymnastics Association, the selection committee recently announced. Rising sophomore Jacob Houder earned first-team distinction, while Jake Schonig, who graduated from the Academy in May, earned second-team honors.
With a 3.72 grade-point-average in his first season at the Academy, Houder was one of 75 first-team selections. A two-time USAG All-America honoree, Houder set the program's pommel horse record on three occasions and was named the program's MVP. He was also named to the Mountain West Conference Scholar-Athlete list.
Schonig, who spent the fall semester as the Academy's Wing Commander, graduated with a 3.40 GPA. He was one of 55 All-America Scholar-Athlete second-team honorees. A Mountain Pacific Sports Federation academic all-conference selection, Schonig won his second consecutive USAG title on the still rings and was a finalist for the prestigious Nissen-Emery award, which is given each year to the nation's top senior gymnast. It is the third straight year that Schonig has earned the CGA honor.
In all, Air Force 20 gymnasts have earned All-America Scholar-Athlete honors since the CGA began handing out the academic awards in 1990.
To be honored as a CGA All-America Scholar-Athlete, the individuals must have a GPA of 3.2 or higher. First-team distinction is given to those gymnasts with at least a 3.50 GPA, while those with a 3.20 to 3.49 GPA are awarded second-team status.
