TULSA, Okla. - After one round at the 2009 U.S. Amateur Championship, Air Force senior golfer Tom Whitney sits in a tie for 12th place in the 312-player field. Whitney shot a 71 (+1) in his opening round at the par-70, 7,331-yard Cedar Ridge Country Club.
Whitney, playing in his second career USGA championship event, carded a pair of birdies and three bogeys in the first round, which saw just five players shoot below par for the day. Whitney will conclude stroke play tomorrow with a round at the par-70, 7,093-yard Southern Hills Country Club, with an 8:20 a.m. (CT) tee time.
Following the first two rounds of stroke play, the field of 312 golfers will be cut to the lowest 64 scorers, who will advance to match play. All match play rounds (which are 18 holes, with the exception of the final match) will be played at Southern Hills. The first round of match play will take place on Wednesday, Aug. 26, followed by the second and third rounds on Thursday. Quarterfinals and semifinals will be played on Friday and Saturday, respectively, followed by the 36-hole championship match on Sunday, Aug. 30.
Should Whitney make finish among the low 64 scorers tomorrow, it would mark the second time in as many USGA championship events that he has survived the first cut. Whitney advanced to the second round of match play at the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship earlier this summer.
