Jarod Stigall notched a hat trick Saturday night to lead the University of Denver men's soccer team to a 5-1 victory over Air Force at Cadet Soccer Stadium in the first Mountain Pacific Sports Federation game for both teams. With the victory, DU improved to 4-3-2 overall and 1-0 in the MPSF, while the Falcons fell to 2-7 overall and 0-1 in league play.
Stigall scored his first goal of the night in the 29th minute to give the Pioneers a 2-0 lead. After receiving a nice back pass from Matt Kirby, he put a shot past Air Force goalie Matt Underwood from 15 yards that just snuck inside the far left post.
Blake Shannon had given the Pioneers ahead 1-0 with his second goal of the season in the 24th minute. Mark Weigand started the play with a free kick from 25 yards out that bounced right to Shannon, who placed a shot from six yards past Underwood.
The Pioneers went up 3-0 in the 49th minute when Alex Tarnoczi took a free kick from about 35 yards out to the right of Underwood. The shot bounced through players from both teams and found the bottom right corner of the net. Stigall then scored his second of the game less than four minutes later when he dribbled down the left side of the field and rifled a shot from approximately the same spot as Tarnoczi's free kick that found the upper left corner past Underwood.
Senior Kyle Moses scored AFA's only goal in the 57th minute when he gathered a loose ball and fired a shot from 15 yards past DU keeper Joe Willis. It was Moses' second goal of the season. Sophomore Zane Dydasco had a great chance earlier in the second half, but his shot found the crossbar.
Stigall completed his hat trick in the 86th minute by taking a pass from Alex DeCosta and placing a shot from 10 yards out past Falcon backup goalie Patrick Gould.
Air Force, which leads the MPSF in total shots, had 19 compared to 12 for Denver. However, the Falcons could muster just four shots on goal, while the Pioneers had eight. Moses had a game-high five shots and two of AFA's four shots on goal. Underwood made two saves and Gould one for AFA, while Willis made three saves in his first action of the season for DU.
Air Force returns to action next Friday, Oct. 8 against UNLV in Las Vegas, Nev. The game is scheduled to start at 7 p.m. (PT).
