John Tilton and Conor Henry each scored a goal and Matt Underwood made four saves to post his second career shutout Friday night as the Air Force men's soccer team posted a 2-0 victory over San Jose State at Cadet Soccer Stadium. With the victory, its third in the last four games, Air Force improved to 5-9 overall and 3-3 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation, while the Spartans fell to 7-6-2 and 1-3-2 in league play.
The Falcons came out of the gate on fire, placing two shots on goal before Tilton scored his first goal of the season in the 11th minute by heading a corner kick from Zane Dydasco past SJSU goalie Jonathan Lester. The Falcons outshot the Spartans 10-3 in the first half and SJSU did not post its first shot on goal until the 69th minute thanks to a stellar defensive effort from Air Force's back line. Tilton, along with junior captain Eric Wilson and sophomores Eric Tise and Trevor Wade held the conference's leading goal scorer, Josh Boemecke, to two total shots and just one on net.
"Our defensive intensity was outstanding tonight," said Air Force head coach Doug Hill. "We never let them get into a rhythm and Matt (Underwood) also did a nice job. This was a tough game for us but we took advantage of our opportunities and didn't allow them many of their own."
Henry added an insurance goal in the 88th minute after a flurry in front of the net and firing a shot from 15 yards low and to the right of Lester. Senior Kyle Moses, sophomore Kevin Durr and freshman Jacob Chavers each had three shots for Air Force, while SJSU's Nick Cashmere had a game-high four. The Falcons held a 17-12 advantage in total shots and had nine corner kicks, compared to two for the visitors.
Air Force plays its final home game of the season on Sunday, Oct. 24 against Sacramento State. The game is scheduled to begin at 1:30 p.m.
