LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Highlighted by a victory from senior Joe Silvio at 159 pounds, three members of the Air Force boxing team wrapped up competition at the Hard Rock Hotel on Saturday, Oct. 23, in Las Vegas, Nev. Classmate Mike Dunn, who lost a narrow decision at 151 pounds, was named the Academy's Boxer of the week.
Dunn opened the Falcons' night against Corey Diehl from the host UNLV. Competing in a 151-pound bout, Dunn dropped a close decision to Diehl.
"It was a really close bout," assistant coach Capt Blake Baldi said following the bout. "Coach (Weichers) and I both thought Dunn had it. He fought a great fight." For his performance tonight, the coaches awarded Dunn the program's Boxer of the Week award.
Silvio picked up the Falcons' lone win, as he defeated Coast Guard's Justin Maio in a 159-pound bout. The senior "fought great" to earn the judges' decision.
Fellow senior Matt DeMars closed out the night with a 118-pound loss to Las Vegas amateur boxer, Jesus Zambrano. Competing up in weight from his normal 112 pounds, DeMars competed tough with Zambrano before falling by a close decision.
"It was a pretty good show," Baldi continued. "They guys fought tough. They did what we asked and I was happy with what I saw. Going forward from this, I think we learned a lot and we're going to get better."
The Falcons return to action next Friday (Oct. 29), when the squad travels to Detroit, Mich., for the annual Service Academy Classic at the Detroit Athletic Club. Action is slated to begin at 8 p.m. (EST).
