LARAMIE, Wyo. - Sophomore Kimber Shealy became just the second Air Force female to clear the 13-foot bar in the pole vault, as members of the track and field team traveled to Laramie, Wyo., for the final tune-up before the upcoming conference championships. Shealy cleared a personal-best bar of 13'3½" to move into second on the Academy's all-time list.
Shealy's mark, which bettered the field by over three feet, provisionally qualified her to the NCAA Championships. Breaking her previous personal-height by six inches, Shealy recorded the third-best clearance in the conference this season and moved into the top-30 nationally. Her 13'3½" clearance, second in Academy history (indoor or outdoor) only to Melissa Beerse's indoor record of 13'6½", is a Robert Shine Invitational record, as well as the best clearance ever at War Memorial Fieldhouse.
Senior Sara Neubauer, who upped her Academy record in the shot put for the fifth time in seven meets this season, won that event with a toss of 52'11". Bettering the field by nearly eight feet, she remains unbeaten in the shot put this season. Neubauer also placed first in the weight throw with a distance of 61'6¼", displacing the field by over four feet.
The Falcons received several other first-place finishes during their tune-up for the conference championships. Freshman Justin Manchester placed first in the 400-meter dash with a time of 50.95, while classmate Rob Simmons cleared a career-best matching height of 16'6¾" to win the pole vault. Cale Simmons recorded the identical clearance (also matching his personal-best), but finished second based on attempts. On the women's side, sophomore Phaelen French won the 600-yard run in a time of 1:31.51.
Freshman Chad LIscar was the runner-up in the 200-meter dash, clocking a time of 23.27, while classmate Blair O'Bryant finished second in the 600-yard run with a time of 1:17.73. Fellow freshman Laura Young crossed the finish line of the 400-meter dash in 1:06.15 to finish second.
From the field, freshman Zach Wood cleared a career-best 6'6" in the high jump to finish second. Sophomore Kyle Schwochow increased his distance in the shot put for the second straight week, tossing a 53'1¾" to finish second in the 15-member event and improve his ninth-place standing on the program's all-time list. Classmate Robert Drye placed second among collegiate throwers (and fifth overall) in the weight throw with a distance of 59'10½".
Freshman Loren Van Rassen finished third in the high jump with a personal-best height of 5'5". She becomes the second Falcon in as many weeks to enter the program's all-time standings in the high jump, tying with Danielle McCarty for ninth.
Air Force returns to action next week, when it travels to Albuquerque, N.M., for the 2010 Mountain West Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships. Action is slated to begin on Thursday, Feb. 25, at the ABQ Convention Center.
