Tom Whitney Named Top Seed at San Diego Regional

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Air Force golfer Tom Whitney has been selected to compete in the 2010 NCAA Golf Regional Championships, as announced by the NCAA Division I Men's Golf Committee Monday afternoon. The senior from La Quinta, Calif., one of 45 individuals awarded an at-large invitation, was named the top-seeded individual at the San Diego Regional, hosted by San Diego State.
This year, the regionals will take place May 20-22 at one of six sites across the nation, including Carlton Oaks Golf Club, where Whitney will be competing. Three of the regional sites, including Carlton Oaks, will feature 13 teams, along with 10 individuals not on a qualifying team. Meanwhile, the three remaining sites will host 14 teams and five individuals not on a qualifying team.
At the conclusion of each regional competition, the top five teams and top individual not on an advancing team will move on to the championship finals, being held June 1-6 at The Honors Course in Chattanooga, Tenn.
Whitney, who has been selected to participate in an NCAA Regional for the second-straight season, is wrapping up a stellar career for the Falcons. In 2009-10, Whitney recorded five top-three finishes and seven top-five finishes, including a win at the Triumph at Pauma Valley in mid-March. He currently holds a season stroke average of 71.4, which is on pace to break the school record of 72.0, which Whitney set during the 2008-09 season.
The Mountain West Conference will also be well-represented at this year's NCAA Regionals, with six of the conference's nine teams earning invitations to the championships, along with an additional individual. UNLV leads the way, seeded second at Carlton Oaks, while host San Diego State is seeded fifth in the region. TCU earned the fifth seed in the Texas A&M Regional, while BYU is seeded ninth in the Atlanta Regional, hosted by Georgia Tech. Finally, Mountain West Conference champion Colorado State (6) and New Mexico (9) will each compete at the Washington Regional, along with Wyoming's Gabe Maier.
