AUSTIN, Texas - The Air Force track and field team concluded action at the NCAA Outdoor Championships West Preliminary Meet this evening (May 29) in Austin, Texas. During the final day of action at Mike A. Myers Stadium, sophomore James Walmsley and senior Sara Neubauer competed in the national semifinals of the men's 5000-meter run and women's hammer throw, respectively.
In his first race of the weekend, Walmsley just missed a spot in the national finals of the 5000-meter run. Crossing the finish line in a time of 14:24.07, he finished 19th in the 48-member semifinal race. With his third fastest 5000-meter time of the season, Walmsley finished just 14 seconds out of the top 12 that advanced to the finals in Eugene.
Neubauer tied for 36th in the hammer throw with a distance of 172'1". Neubauer, who concluded her third straight day of competition in the national semifinals after graduating from the Academy on Wednesday, recorded her best throw on her final attempt of the trials.
However, the season continues for Neubauer, as a trio of newly commissioned second lieutenants head to the 2010 NCAA Outdoor Championships on June 9-12 in Eugene, Ore. Neubauer (shot put, discus throw) and Nick Frawley (pole vault) will compete in the national finals of their respective events, while Ally Romanko will open action in the semifinals of the 800-meter run.
