HARTFORD, Conn. - With a score of 76.900, Air Force freshman Colton Wulf wrapped up competition at the 2010 Visa National Championships this afternoon (Aug. 11) at the XL Center in Hartford, Conn. Competing against some of the best gymnasts in the country, Wulf placed 16th in the Junior Division (ages 16-18).
Wulf opened the day on the pommel horse, scoring an 11.350. He continued on to the still rings (13.100), before recording his highest score of the day on the vault with a 14.250. Wulf rounded out his scores with a 12.250 on the parallel bars, 12.500 on the high bar and a 13.450 on the floor exercise. His best finish came on the still rings, as he tied for seventh. He narrowly missed the top 10 on the high bar (11th) and floor exercise (12th tie).
"It was one of the gutsiest performances that I have seen in the five years that I've been here," Air Force head coach Kip Simons said. "To come straight out of Basic Training, and the challenges that go with that, and to hit six-for-six was awesome. This is a testament to the type of character that Colton is. He competed like a veteran. I look forward to the four years we're going to have together."
Wulf, the first Air Force gymnast, to ever compete at the national championship meet, is just one week removed from completing Basic Cadet Training at the Academy.
