Air Force Hosts AFA Fall Classic
The Air Force women's soccer team plays host to the 2010 Air Force Fall Classic this weekend, Sept. 3 & 5. Friday's action pits Fairleigh Dickinson vs. Northern Colorado at 2 p.m., followed by The Citadel vs. Air Force at 4:30 p.m. On Sunday, The Citadel takes on Northern Colorado at 9 a.m. and Air Force plays Fairleigh Dickinson at 11 a.m.
2010 Falcons
Air Force returns 15 letterwinners, including eight starters in 2009. The Falcons also welcome seven freshmen. Air Force returns leading scorer Stephanie Patterson, a sophomore forward and two-time All-MWC selection in Bridgett Murphy, a junior forward.
Recapping Last Weekend
Air Force split a pair of matches last weekend, defeating Boise State 2-1 in double-overtime Friday and falling 2-0 to Dayton Sunday.
In the Boise game, the Falcons rallied from a 1-0 deficit, trying the game up in the 83rd minute on freshman Megan Dozier's third goal of the season. The Falcons won it on Krystin Shanklin's successful penalty kick in the 105th minute for the win.
The Falcons were blanked for the second time this season vs. Dayton. The Falcons are 2-0 when scoring so far this season.
Team Statistical Leaders
Freshman forward Megan Dozier leads Air Force with three goals and six points. Junior forward Bridgett Murphy and sophomore forward Stephanie Patterson are tied for the team assists lead with two each. Freshman Kelly Stambaugh has logged all 375 minutes in front of the net for Air Force and has a 1.20 goals against average and 21 saves.
Team Captains
Juniors Krystin Shanklin, Meagan Eissele and Cassie Wilson will be the Air Force team captains for 2010.
Scouting The Opponents
- The Citadel is 1-1 on the season after splitting matches with Jacksonville (lost, 3-0) and Maine (won, 3-1). Freshman midfielder Ruth Leiva scored all three goals for the Citadel vs. Maine.
- Fairleigh Dickinson is 0-2 on the season after dropping matches to Manhattan and Seton Hall. the Knights are looking for their first goal this season.
The Coaches
- Larry Friend is in his second year as the head coach at Air Force. The 1985 USAFA grad is 4-17-1 as a head coach.
- Bob Winch (UNC Pembroke `86) is 13-60-5 in his 6th year as head coach at The Citadel and is 125-160-20 in his 18th year overall.
- Renee Montana (Lenior-Rhyne `95) is 21-51-2 in her 5th season at Fairleigh Dickinson and is 102-112-11 in her 13th year overall.
Series History vs. Opponents
- Air Force takes on both The Citadel and Fairleigh Dickinson for the first time.

Air Force travels to the Catamount Classic in Cullowhee, N.C. next weekend, Sept. 10 & 12. The Falcons take on tourney-host Western Carolina on Friday the 10th and Mercer on Sunday the 12th.
