HARTFORD, Conn. - Air Force freshman gymnast Colton Wulf (Wheat Ridge, Colo.) will represent the Academy in the Junior Division of the 2010 Visa Championships in Hartford, Conn., on Wednesday, Aug.11. He is the first member of the Air Force men's gymnastics team to ever compete at the U.S. national championship meet.
Wulf will compete during Wednesday's 1 p.m. session at the XL Center, beginning on the pommel horse. The Visa Championships will determine the members of the 2010 U.S. Men's Junior and Senior National Team.
In May, as a member of the 5280 Gymnastics Club, Wulf placed fifth in the all-around at the 2010 Junior Olympic National Championships with a combined score of 85.550. He accounted for top-10 event finishes on the floor exercise, vault and parallel bars. He also competed at the Winter Cup Challenge in February, finishing within the top half of the field.
"I am really pleased with Colton's last two weeks of training," Air Force head coach Kip Simons said. "Coming straight off of six weeks of basic training and heading to the U.S. Nationals is a tall order, but if anyone can do it, Colton can. He is one of the best juniors in the nation, so I expect a strong performance, despite coming off of the rigors of basic training."
This will be a busy week for members of the Air Force gymnastics program in Hartford, as Simons will be inducted into the USA Gymnastics Hall of Fame on Friday, Aug. 13. He will be inducted into the Class of 2010 with Wendy Bruce, Kevin Mazeika, Dominique Moceanu Robert Null and Jennifer Parilla.
