Fencers finish high in Nick Toth Open

The Air Force Academy fencing team was host to the annual Nick Toth Open on Sept. 18-19. The Academy's men's foil team, led by senior Nicholas Stockdale, had a victorious day, with three fencers finishing in the top three of the senior mixed foil tournament on Sunday. On Saturday, sophomores Heather Nelson and Scott Pippin and junior Simone Barrette also enjoyed success in their individual events. The Nick Toth Open fielded over 180 fencers in the senior categories. Fencers from around the region also competed in the Y12, Y14 and cadet divisions.
On Saturday, Sept. 18, Nelson was the senior women's saber champion. Nelson won the championship bout, 15-5, against her opponent from the Colorado Fencing Club. Junior Saskia Hicks finished in eighth place. In senior mixed saber, Pippin advanced to the finals as the No. 1 Seed, but lost the bout to Bill Thanhauser from the Fencing Academy of Denver, 15-7. Pippen become the second-place finisher. Freshmen Emerson Woerner and Michael Gallagher finished tied for third place and fifth place, respectively.Junior Geoffrey Pamerleau finished in eighth place and sophomore Robert Wood finished 11th.
In senior women's epee, junior Simone Barrette advanced to the semi-finals, but lost the bout, 15-14, to her opponent. Barrette finished tied for third place in the tournament. Freshmen Olivia Prosseda took eighth place and Juli Nokelberg finished in ninth place.
In the senior mixed epee tournament, freshman Chase Houser was the Falcons' top finisher in seventh place. Senior Daniel Trapani finished in 11th place, while junior Mister Jackson finished tied for 12th place. Junior Ben Rinaldi finished 15th. Barrette and freshman Adam Walker tied for 22nd place. Prosseda finished 38th and sophomore Dalton Boatright finished in 59th place.
The senior mixed epee tournament had the largest field with over 70 fencers competing.
On Sunday, Sept. 19, in senior women's foil, freshman Diana Hock and sophomore Yannie Horth finished in seventh and 11th place, respectively.
Finally, three members of the Falcons' foil team finished in the top three spots of the senior mixed foil tournament. Stockdale, the No. 1 Seed in the event, won the championship bout, 15-10. Freshmen Daniel Cohen and Travis Dyson tied for third place. Freshman Yevgeniy Shmurak finished 15th, while senior William Hock finished in 25th place. This event had a field of over 30 competitors.
The fencing team will travel to Texas for the Amarillo Open on Oct. 2-3.
