Detroit, Mich. - The Air Force boxing team collected a 5-1 record over its counterparts from Army and Navy at the annual Service Academy Classic in Detroit, Mich., on Friday, Oct. 28. The Falcons went 3-0 against Navy and 2-1 against Army, as senior Mike McLain was named the Academy's Boxer of the Week.
"Overall it was a great trip for us," assistant coach Capt Blake Baldi said. "The guys looked really good in the ring and the hard work this semester has paid off."
McLain claimed the team's weekly award after claiming a decision over a tough opponent in Army's Jon Maddux in the 178-poun contest. McLain kept Maddux under constant pressure with excellent combination punches.
Casey Habluetzel won his 168-pound bout with Navy's Jake Tonorio before the final bell sounded. Habluetzel forced the referee to stop the contest in the third round after repeatedly catching his shorter opponent coming in.
The Falcons' final three victories were all by unanimous decisions. Denis Vorobyov claimed a victory over Navy's Sean Hunt at 175-pounds, as he controlled the bout with an outstanding jab and kept Hunt on the defensive. Tyrus Korecki (157 pounds, vs. Army's Zachariah Hildebrandt) and Drew Pineda (119 pounds, Navy's Adam Locklear) both fought great fights, as they took the fight to their respective opponents for the full six minutes for the judges' vote.
Zac Spranger also competed for the Falcons at the Detroit Athletic Club, dropping a 195-pound decision to Army's Mikus Iguanis.
Air Force returns to action on Friday, Nov. 4, when it hosts Army in its annual showdown. Action begins at 4:30 p.m., in the Cadet Gym Boxing Room. Admission is free.
