Jamela Satterfield, the lone senior for the Falcons in 2011-12, will write an occasional blog about what's going on in the Air Force women's basketball program.
Hey everybody--I'm baa-ack!! We have been super busy and on the grind. We left for our first game on November 11th to play Lipscomb in Nashville, Tennessee. We beat Lipscomb last year at home and that was exciting. This year, we knew they would want to defend their home court and we wanted to start the year off right so it would be a battle. We won with a score of 68-59. This was our first road win in 43 tries and my first road win since I've been at the Academy. We were hyped and winning on Veteran's Day made it that much better. We opened up at home versus Denver who is an instate rival. We came up a little bit short, but I think our team grew and knew that we had to get the next one. Our next road trip was to Texas, where we picked up two more road wins versus Texas Southern and Texas State. After Texas Southern, we ate at the Cheesecake Factory in Houston and since I don't care for cheesecake, Katie and I shared a strawberry shortcake--it was amazing.
We spent Thanksgiving at Dymond's house and her parents made a delicious Thanksgiving dinner for the whole team. We spent the day relaxing and watching TV until Coach A set up charades. What you have to understand is that this is a different type of charades. Coach A's version of charades is a long short story. This year the story started in the White House, then we had Michelle Ivey as a fashion show model, and ended with Shanaynay (from Martin). Yes, it was too much fun!!
In Maryland, we went to one of the best malls I've ever been to, but I didn't buy anything. A lot of the girls bought lots because as you know we get paid monthly. Also while we were at Navy, I got to see one of my best friends, John. John was at the Prep School with me and he now lives in Annapolis and works for the Coast Guard. The Navy game was disappointing--it's such a rivalry, but it is such a pleasure to play against our sister service academy. We learned a lot from that game. We learned that the game is 40 minutes long and we must compete, play hard and play together the whole game.
Here at home, we hosted the Air Force Classic. The day before games started, we held a banquet at the Academy Hotel and got to know the players of Idaho State, University of South Florida and Jackson State. They had a lot of questions about what we do here at the Academy. One of the girls from USF asked us about our CST (combat survival training) experience. We got questions about our day-to-day schedule and about what we do with our free time. It always cracks me up because people don't understand that even though we go to a service academy, we are still college students. We came away with one win against Jackson State and lost to South Florida by three--a game which we should have won.
Classes have been going good and even though I have another semester to go, I can't wait till graduation. I'm excited to be a civil engineer in the real Air Force and make that real money!! Holla! This week is finals week, but I only have three: Astronautical Engineering, Nutrition and Concrete. We are also keeping up with workouts by doing bike chamber, shooting and weight lifting.
I'm excited to be playing in my home state after finals; we travel to San Jose State and Pacific right before Christmas. I can't wait to be home for the holidays with my family and friends and enjoying home cooked meals. I can't wait for my Auntie Coco to make that gumbo and Auntie Ruby to make some enchiladas. Yum Yum!! After Christmas, we report in Tuscaloosa, Ala., to practice and then play the Crimson Tide on the 30th. Happy Holidays!!
Until Next Time...Peace
-J
