SAN JOSE, Calif. - Playing with a depleted lineup, the Air Force women's basketball team dropped a 68-53 contest to San Jose State Monday evening at the Event Center.
Junior Danielle Sorrera (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) led the Falcons with a career-best 11 points and four assists, while Brittany Johnson scored 22 points to lead San Jose State.
In the first half, the Falcons shot under 30 percent from the field and were outrebounded 23-11, as they went into the intermission with a 38-18 deficit. After the break, the Spartans pushed their advantage to as many as 27 points, but a 10-0 Air Force run brought the Spartans' lead back to under 20. However, the Falcons continued to shoot poorly and struggle on the boards in the 15-point loss.
With starting forwards Dymond James and Katie Hilbig out of the lineup due to injury, Air Force was outrebounded 49-28 for the game. The Falcons also shot just 29.4 percent from the field, while the Spartans connected on 52 percent of their field goal attempts. Meanwhile, Air Force grabbed a season-best 15 steals, led by Sorrera with three, while forcing 34 turnovers by San Jose State.
"We got out of the gate slow, due to the long break between games because of finals," said Air Force head coach Andrea Williams. "We really focused late in the second half to get into our press, and we turned them over--that's our game."
Alicia Leipprandt (Jr., Ubly, Mich.) added nine points for the Falcons, while Kami Bohannon (So., DeSoto, Texas) scored a career-best eight points off the bench.
The Falcons wrap up their California road trip on Wednesday, when they visit Pacific in a 2:00 p.m. (PT) contest.
"We really are focused on us and we need people to step up while we deal with injuries," continued Williams. "We will regroup for Pacific next...our Falcons will fight back!"
