Jacob Houder and Travis Myers Named Mountain West Scholar-Athletes

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Air Force rising seniors Jacob Houder and Travis Myers were named recipients of the Mountain West Scholar-Athlete award, the league office announced this afternoon (June 28). Houder (Pinehurst, Texas) is making his second appearance on the MW Scholar-Athlete team, while Myers (Woodland Park, Colo.) is making his first.
Houder holds a 3.68 grade-point average in biochemistry, while Myers maintains a 3.92 GPA in materials chemistry - the third-highest GPA among intercollegiate athletes at the Academy. This is the third academic award of the season for the pair, who also received the USA Gymnastics Scholar-Athlete award and academic all-conference honors from the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation.
After missing his sophomore season with injury, Houder returned to the lineup in 2011 and competed on the pommel horse in 11 meets this year. His best score of the season, 13.700, came at the All-Academy Championships. Myers made his collegiate debut this season, competing on both the pommel horse (season best score of 11.800) and parallel bars (13.600).
In all, six gymnasts have been honored with Mountain West Scholar-Athlete status. Joining Myers and Houder, who also claimed the honor in 2009, are former Falcons James Hayes (2001-02), Aaron Jackson (2003), Patrick McAndrew (2002-03-04) and Brian Boardman (2007-08).
To be eligible for the Scholar-Athlete award, student-athletes must have completed at least two academic terms at the member institution, while maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or better, and have participated in varsity competition in an NCAA-sponsored sport.
