Falcons Place 11th at Season-OPening Tournament

The Air Force golf team wrapped up action Tuesday at the second annual Mark Simpson Colorado Invitational, hosted by the University of Colorado. The Falcons finished the tournament in 11th place with a total score of 886 after firing a 299 in the final round on the par-72, 7,741-yard course at the Colorado National Golf Club.
Sophomore Blake Jones posted Air Force's best round of the day with a career-best 72, finishing in a tie for 62nd overall with a three-round total of 228. Fellow sophomore Kyle Westmoreland was the top finisher for the Falcons, placing in a tie for 36th with a five-over par total of 221 after a final round 75. Senior Caleb Leestma finished one stroke back and tied for 41st after a final round 78.
Junior Andrew Hoops (T47/223) and sophomore Phillip Colwell (T60/227) shot a 74 and 79, respectively, on Tuesday, while junior Wes Denny, who played as an individual player, finished in a tie for 73rd at 231.
"It was a disappointing finish to the event," said Air Force head coach George Koury. "However, we will learn from our mistakes and be better for our next event."
Host Colorado won the tournament with a 24-under par 840, while CU's Beau Schoolcraft and San Diego's Alex Ching tied for the individual title with an 11-under-par 205.
The Falcons are back in action Sept. 18-19 by hosting the 43rd annual Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational at the Eisenhower Golf Club - Blue Course. Play begins on Sunday, Sept. 18 at 8:15 a.m.
