Falcons Travel to Houston For Rice Intercollegiate

Rice IntercollegiateFeb. 20-21, 2012Westwood Golf Club, Houston, Texas THIS WEEKThe Air Force golf team opens its 2012 spring season on Monday, Feb. 20 at the Rice Intercollegiate in Houston, Texas. The two-day tournament takes place at the par-72, 7,184-yard Westwood Golf Club. Two rounds will be played on Monday, withe the final round on Tuesday, Feb. 21. Each day will begin with an 8:00 a.m. shotgun start. THE FIELDFifteen teams are slated to compete in this week's tournament. They are: Air Force, Rice, Florida Gulf Coast, Houston Baptist, Houston, Kansas State, Louisiana-Monroe, Louisiana Tech, Missouri State, Northwestern, New Mexico State, Texas State, UT-San Antonio, Wichita State and Winthrop. Making the trip for Air Force will be Kyle Westmoreland, Caleb Leestma, Andrew Hoops, Blake Edwards and Blake Jones. AIR FORCE HEAD COACH George KouryAir Force head coach George Koury is in his 10th season at the helm of the Falcons' golf program. After serving three seasons as an assistant under legendary coach Gene Miranda, Koury took over the program at the start of the 2002-03 season.Koury, a 1993 Academy graduate and former team captain and MVP, has helped the Falcons continue their dominance at the Service Academy Golf Classic, winning 15 straight titles at the event. In addition, he helped lead Air Force to the team title at the 2005 Falcon Invitational, marking the first time since the inaugural event in 1969 that the team won its own tournament outright. LAST TIME OUTThe Falcons captured their 15th consecutive Service Academy Golf Classic title to close out the 2011 fall season. The Falcons, who have not lost the SACG since 1994, posted a three-round total of 938, 12 shots better than second-place Navy and 25 better than third-place Army. The tournament was not played in 2007 and '08. Air Force sophomore Kyle Westmoreland also recaptured the individual title for Air Force with an 11-over par total of 227, beating teammate Robert Belz by five strokes. Westmoreland is the 12th Air Force player to win the individual title, the first since Kyle Bailey in 2009. EISENHOWER BLUE COURSE NAMED ONE OF THE BESTIn its recent list of the Best Campus Courses, Golfweek has recognized the Eisenhower Golf Club - Blue Course as one of the best in the nation. The Falcons' home course checks in at No. 21 on the list and is one of just two Mountain West Conference home courses to be recognized (New Mexico's Championship Course is listed at No. 13).
