
Women's tennis travels to Long Beach Invitational

This Week: Air Force travels to Long Beach, Calif., to participate in the Long Beach Invitational Oct. 3-5.
Last Week: Sophomore Chloe Forlini won the fifth singles flight and the doubles team of junior Mary Meyers and sophomore Tracy Landram won the top doubles flight to lead Air Force in the final day of the USAFA Invitational Sunday at the Academy. Forlini battled back after dropping the first set to beat Silviya Zheylazkova of Wyoming, 5-7, 6-4, 6-2 to be the lone singles champion for the Falcons. Meyers and Landram defeated McKenzie Davis and Kallie Sperry of Utah State, 8-6. In other doubles action Jocelle Rudico and Marcelli Magday lost the consolation finals to Marquette's Erin Gebes and Paula Tormos, 8-4, in the second flight. Chloe and sister, Lily Forlini, lost in the finals of the third flight, 8-2, to Andreea Badileanu and Ramona Costea of Miami-Ohio. Sierra Stapper and Carley Hatcliff of Air Force defeated Lea Krajcovicova and Jessica Cedillio of Northern Colorado, 8-7 (3) in the fourth flight. In other singles action, Meyers fell to Tamara Slijepcevic of Arkansas State, 6-1, 6-1 in the third-place match of the No. 1 singles flight. Marcelli Magday fell to Hillary Walters-West of Northern Colorado in the seventh place match of the second flight, 6-4, 5-7, 10-7. Lily Forlini defeated Beth Coton of Northern Colorad9o, 6-2, 6-2, to take third place in the third flight. Hannaa Shteyn of Miami-Ohio defeated Landram in the finals of the fourth flight, 6-3, 6-7 (4), 6-3. Rudico was a 6-3, 6-4 winner of Jessica Cedillo of Northern Colorado to take third place in the sixth flight, while Stapper fell 6-2, 6-2 to Rebecca Costa of Colorado State in the third-place match in the seventh flight.
Head Coach Kim Gidley: Kim Gidley enters her 17th season as head coach of the women's tennis team at the Air Force Academy in 2014-15. The first civilian head coach in the 37-year history of the program, Gidley became the winningest coach in the history of the program in 2003 with her 76th victory. She recorded her 100th career victory during the 2005-06 season against South Dakota State and her 200th against Seattle University last season. She enters the `14-15 campaign with a 212-215 career record. Gidley led the Falcons to a 17-9 record last season, the first time since moving to Division I in 1996 that the team has had five straight winning seasons. Gidley belongs to several professional tennis organizations, including the United States Professional Tennis Association. She has been honored twice by the USPTA as the Intermountain College Coach of the Year, most recently in March 2008. Among her other awards, she received the USTA/ITA National Community Outreach Award for 2009 as well as USAFA's Instructor of the Semester for lifetime sports.
