Air Force women's basketball (1-6) dropped a 85-64 contest to Santa Clara (5-2) in day two action at the 2014 Air Force Classic Saturday afternoon at Clune Arena.
Senior Jimi Blagowsky led three Falcons in double-figures with 21 points. With the win, Santa Clara claimed the AF Classic title, going undefeated on the weekend.
Tournament MVP Nici Gilday scored 18 points to lead the Broncos. Vanessa Leo scored 14 points and Maddison Allen and Sidney Reilly scored 12 points each.
Blagowsky led the Falcons in scoring for the second-consecutive game, shooting 7-of-11 from the field and 5-of-6 from three-point range. Blagowsky also led the Falcons with four assists and was named to the Air Force Classic All-Tournament Team.
Freshman Cortney Porter and junior Madeleine Philpot scored 12 points each for AFA. Philpot and senior Lindsey Lewis led the Falcons with five rebounds.
Air Force started the game out on a roll building a nine point lead early on, when it led 23-14 with 9:06 left in the first half. The lead did not last as Santa Clara overpowered the Falcons with its height advantage. The Broncos led 38-32 at the half and never trailed in the second-half. Santa Clara had a 58-27 advantage in rebounding and 33-10 in second-chance points.
Last Time vs. Denver
The visiting Pioneers shot over 59 percent from the field, as the Air Force women's basketball team dropped a 72-64 contest to Denver Nov. 16, 2013, afternoon in Clune Arena.
Senior Cherae Medina led four Falcons scoring in double figures, finishing with 14 points. Junior Jimi Blagowsky added 11 points, including three baskets from long range, while Camille Thompson and Missy Byrd each chipped in 10 points.
The score was close throughout the opening half, featuring 10 lead changes, but the Pioneers began to pull away in the final minutes of the period, taking a 35-30 advantage at the intermission. Shooting 75 percent from the field in the second half alone, Denver eventually pushed its advantage to 56-42 midway through the half.
Blagowsky, who had struggled offensively throughout the game, responded with a three-pointer as the shot clock expired to ignite a 9-0 Air Force run, but the Falcons were unable to get any closer than five points the rest of the way.
Denver, which was led by Theresa Wirth's 19 points and 12 rebounds, held a 36-25 advantage on the glass, while Air Force registered 11 steals and forced the Pioneers into 24 turnovers.
