The Air Force volleyball team held its first scrimmage of the 2014 season this evening at the Cadet East Gym. Following the four-set match, head coach Matt McShane and senior setter Hillary Keltner talked to GoAirForceFalcons.com about their thoughts on tonight's scrimmage, practice and the upcoming season.
Keltner on the Scrimmage
I think it was really good. We've been playing each other in practice every day, but there is definitely a different vibe when the bleachers are out, everybody's in here and we've got our jerseys on. There were a little bit of nerves - especially from the freshmen - the first couple plays, but everyone got into a good rhythm. I'm excited ... we have another week to get better, another week for a scrimmage. We have two weeks to get better before we even play another opponent. So, it was good. I feel awesome. Like Matt keeps saying, this is the best Falcon team we've had out there in forever."
McShane's First Thoughts
We're excited. We're going to make history this year.
McShane on Keltner
Now, I just need to speak about Hill. She was out-of-system a ton tonight and still set great sets. So, I'm sure the hitting percentage on that side was a little rough, but she made great sets the whole night and stayed positive with her teammates ... showing a bunch of leadership, showing a positive vibe on the court, for lack of a better word. But, I can't be more pleased havving a senior setter that's doing the job like she is. She's going to take us a long way.
McShane on the Scrimmage
Great play from everyone. We need to be a little more consistent, but the number of spectacular plays that we are making is off the charts for us. So, I'll take a little bit of the inconsistencies, because we're going to get those fixed in practice during the next couple of weeks. I'm incredibly excited. We're going to have a great year.
The Falcons return to action next Saturday (Aug. 23) with the second of two scrimmages. Action begins at 6:00 p.m., and admission is free.
