MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. -- Freshman Shane Starrett made 40 saves in his first career start as Air Force and Robert Morris skated to a 3-3 overtime tie in an Atlantic Hockey Conference game, Saturday, Oct. 17, at the 84 Lumber Arena in Moon Township, Pa.
After a scoreless first period, the teams exploded for five goals in the second period. Air Force (1-2-1 overall and 0-1-1 AHC) opened the scoring when Falcons created a turnover on the forecheck and Tyler Ledford scored his first of the season at 3:00. The Falcons took a 2-0 on a 4-on-4 rush. Matt Serratore carried the puck in the zone and his first shot was blocked by the defenseman, but his second sneaked past the Colonial and inside the post for his first career goal at 6:46. Robert Morris answered with a wrister from defenseman Chase Golightly at 11:32. The Falcons' top line struck again as senior Ben Carey scored his second of the season for a 3-1 lead at the 14:01 mark. Ben Kucera sent the puck up to Serratore on the left side who found Carey with a cross-ice pass. The Colonials cut the Falcon lead to 3-2 on the power play when Zac Lynch scored off of a rebound at 16:33.
Midway through the third period, the Colonials forced a turnover at the Air Force blue line and Brady Ferguson tied the game at 3-3 at 11:16 of the third. The game went into overtime, but neither team was able to score in the extra frame. RMU outshot Air Force, 4-3, in overtime, but Starrett kept the net clean.
RMU outshot Air Force, 43-23. The Falcons were 0-for-2 on the power play while RMU was 1-for-5.
"Robert Morris didn't get anything that we didn't give them tonight," head coach Frank Serratore said. "We had them where we wanted them, but we didn't close the deal. I'm very proud of the way our guys played. That was a big, old, strong, physical team and our guys showed up to play. We are learning a lot about our team, but one thing we know is that we have two really good goalies."
Air Force steps out of conference for a two-game series at third-ranked Nebraska Omaha, Friday-Saturday, Oct. 23-24.
