DETROIT, Mich. – Highlighted by four individual titles, the Air Force boxing team finished first at the Chuck Davey Classic on Friday (Oct. 23) night in Detroit. Posting a 4-2 overall record at the annual service academy showcase, the Falcons easily defeated their counterparts from Army (3-3) and Navy (2-4).
Senior Phillip Mays, who returned to the ring for the first time since 2013, was named the team's Boxer of the Week after claiming a 205-pound decision of Navy's Anthony Alexander. "Phil was very sharp," head coach Blake Baldi said of Mays. "He had almost everything working against a tough Navy opponent."
Mays was one of three Falcons to earn a victory over boxers from Annapolis, as junior Landon Tomcho decisioned VJ Sakbun at 139-pounds and senior Gytenis Borusas earned a decision over Jourdan Looney at 185 pounds.
Senior Jacob Berggren picked up the squad's lone victory over Army, as he took a decision from Jordan Isham in the night's 143-pound bout. The Falcons had two additional entries against the Black Knights at the historic Detroit Athletic Club.
