
Air Force Drops Saturday Doubleheader at The Citadel

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Air Force baseball (0-3) dropped both games of its doubleheader at The Citadel (3-0) Saturday afternoon at Riley Park. The Falcons dropped game one, 8-3, and game two, 6-5.
In game one, The Citadel broke up a 3-3 tie with a five-run eighth inning for the win.
Junior right-hander Steven Trojan held the Bulldogs to one earned run over six innings, striking out six in the non-decison. Sophomore righthander Nathan Stanford (0-1) took the loss in relief. Junior lefty Trent Monaghan and freshman Tucker Jacobs also had scoreless relief outings for the Falcons.
The Citadel had seven hits in the game. First baseman Drew Ellis went 2-for-2 with a home run, adding two runs and two RBIs. Shortstop Johnathan Stokes added three hits and two RBIs.
J.P. Sears (1-0) picked up the win in relief for The Citadel. Starting pitcher Austin Livingston pitched 5.1 innings, striking out five and allowing three runs.
The Falcons had three hits in the game. Sophomore Adam Groesbeck went 2-for-3 with a triple and home run to lead AFA. Freshman Shaun Mize added a hit and a run and junior Spencer Draws had an RBI.
The Citadel scored a run in the second inning to take an early lead before the Falcons tied it up with a run in the third. The teams traded two runs each in the sixth to remain tied 3-3. The Bulldogs then broke the game open with the big eighth inning.
In game two, The Citadel jumped ahead 5-0 early on and held off a late Air Force rally for the 6-5 win. The Bulldogs were up 5-0 after five innings, scoring two runs in the first and fourth and one in the fifth inning.
The Falcons scored two in the top of the sixth and gave up a run in the bottom of the inning to make it a 6-2 game. Air Force scored two runs in the seventh and one in the eighth to pull to within one.
The Citadel's closer Skylar Hunter pitched a scoreless ninth inning for his second save of the series. Starting pitcher Austin Mason (1-0) struck out six in six innings, allowing two runs for the win.
Sophomore lefthander Jacob DeVries (0-1) pitched five innings in the start for the Falcons. DeVries stuck out a career-high eight batters. Freshman Ryan Holloway allowed on runs off one hit in three innings of relief.
The Bulldogs had six hits in the game. Designated hitter Connor Walsh had two hits and an RBI to lead the Citadel.
Air Force had seven hits in the game. Freshman Travis Wilkie went 2-for-3 with a double, run and RBI. Sophomores Tyler Jones and Jordan Hanlin hit home runs for the Falcons.
Air Force returns to action Monday, Feb. 16, at Savannah State.
