USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - The eighth-ranked Air Force men's gymnastics team captured their fifth consecutive All-Academy title this afternoon (Feb. 7), at the annual service academy championship meet in Houston, Texas. Tallying the fourth-best team total in Academy history (427.750), the Falcons defeated 11th-ranked Army (413.000) and 12th-ranked Navy (410.200) at NRG Arena.
The Falcons accounted for five first-place finishes and two Academy records at the meet. Sophomore Aaron Nubine equaled the program-best mark on the floor exercise, tallying a 15.400 to win that event by over a half point, while classmate Tim Wang broke his own Air Force record on the pommel horse with a winning score of 15.350. Nubine also finished first on the vault (career-high 14.750), while junior Denis Aurelius and senior Greg Chaput claimed event titles on the still rings (season-best 14.900) and parallel bars (14.550), respectively.
Senior Josh Ramos, who earned the meet's Iron Cross Award, earned third-place finishes on the vault (career-best 14.650) and parallel bars (14.200), while adding a 14.650 on the floor exercise to tie with Wang for fourth.
Freshman Arinn Wade was the runner-up to Wang on the pommel horse, scoring a career-best 15.000 to move into third on the program's all-time list and become just the second Academy gymnast to hit the 15-point mark. Fellow freshman Fletcher Braunton paced the Falcons to a sweep of the top-three scores on that event, as he finished third with a career-best 14.800 - the eighth-highest score in Academy history. Wade and Braunton also tied for third on the still rings with matching marks of 14.200, while classmate Jonathon Fornoff posted at 14.300 to take second on the parallel bars.
Senior Corbin Palmer scored a career-best matching mark of 14.600 to finish fourth on the vault, while classmate Nick Gaudlip earned the same placement on the parallel bars (13.950) and paced the squad on the high bar (13.650, sixth). Sophomore Chase Cannon rounded out the Falcons' contingent of top-five finishers, as he tallied a career-best 14.550 to finish fifth on the pommel horse.
Air Force is off from team competition for the next several weeks, but select gymnasts will travel to Las Vegas over the Feb. 19-21 weekend to compete in the prestigious Winter Cup Challenge.
