
Falcons Wrap Up Action at Jerry Quiller Classic

BOULDER, Colo. - Two improvements to the program's all-time top-10 list highlighted the first day of the outdoor season for the Air Force track and field team this afternoon (March 21) at the Jerry Quiller Classic in Boulder. Backed by two first-place finishes, the Falcons recorded 19 top-five finishes at the meet.
Sophomore Taylor Smith matched the fourth-best clearance in Academy history (6'11") to tie for first in the high jump, while classmate Sydney Rohlwing recorded the program's eighth-fastest 400-meter hurdles time (1:03.29) during a runner-up performance in that event.
Smith was one of two event winners for the Falcons at the Jerry Quiller Classic, as freshman Ryan Vicek won the women's javelin throw with a debut toss of 125'11". In addition, junior Sean Bapty was the top collegiate finisher in the 1500-meter run, finishing third overall with a time of 4:01.09.
Sophomore Cydnee Reese finished second in the discus throw with a toss of 146'4", while freshman Donny Crabill earned the same placement in the javelin throw with a distance of 193'11". Junior Riley Vann and sophomore Emily Smithwick tied for second in the pole vault with matching marks of 10'11¾", while senior Jake Spuller earned a runner-up finish on the track in the 200-meter dash. Clocking 21.37, Spuller finished just 0.01 off of his personal-best mark (21.36), which is tied for ninth on the all-time list.
Vann and Smithwick paced the Falcons to two of the top-three heights in the pole vault, as freshman Hannah Durbin tied for fourth with a clearance of 10'0". Air Force also received multiple top-five finishes in the 200-meter dash, as sophomore Zach Johnson finished fourth in his season debut with a time of 21.61. Johnson added another top-five finish to his day, as he finished fourth overall (second amongst collegiate sprinters) in the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.88.
The men picked up three additional fourth-place finishes, as well as one fifth-place tally. Junior Joey Wilkin finished fourth overall (second, collegiately) in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.68, while classmate Jordan McCool earned the same placement in the 400-meter hurdles after clocking 54.20. Senior Kyle Gartrell cleared 13'11 ¼" to finish fourth in his pole vault debut, while Bapty, junior Grant Caswell, sophomore Grant Garst and freshman Zac Petrie placed fifth in the 4x400-meter relay (3:26.48).
On the women's side, junior Katelyn Holland recorded a throw of 41'1¾" to finish third in the show put, while junior Stephanie Robb and senior Rebecca Esselstein placed fifth in the 400-meter dash (57.97) and 800-meter run (2:17.00), respectively.
The Falcons return to action next weekend (March 27-28), when they travel to San Diego for the Aztec Invitational.
